We found duPlooys to be truly a delight. The entire staff was friendly and helpful and we got to know several of them well after our five day stay. We also had the same guide for most of our trips who was of Mayan/Spanish decent and he told us all about his culture, country, and being in the jungle and took us to meet his mother.
This was a great experience for all of us because we were able to see how the "regular" people live in the San Ignacio area. We went to several caves that have Mayan pottery and artifacts, we canoed on several rivers and swam a lot. The rivers were a great place to beat the heat. Naturally we saw birds, jungle flowers and plants, iguanas, scorpions (in our rooms), ticks, and met other very nice guests. duPlooys cabins were great and having two cabins was perfect for our family because they were small. We also enjoyed the food at duPlooys. We also went to Tikal. We had no hassles at all, the guide took care of the border crossing and the road trip in Guatamala was no problem. We did understand that only recently there were some problems along the border, so we were happy to have a hassle free trip to Guatamala. Tikal was amazing and even though it is a long trip I certainly would recommend it. We were very tired after our five days at duPlooys with some type of activity each day, but it was a good tired. We saw the Belize Zoo on the way back to belize City for the trip to Placencia.
At the Rum Point in Placencia, we enjoyed just relazing. We snorkeled two days and went to both Seine Bight and Palcencia and other days. These two towns are very small and had very few of the typical tourist trappings one might expect at a resort. JoAnn and I enjoyed this but the kids were disappointed with the shopping, etc. This was a good thing for them but is certainly something to warn travelers about. This being the off season at times there were only 2-3 couples at the Rum Point so we had the place to ourselves. The cabanas on the beach were very nice and the beach was deserted. We really enjoyed having access to the sea kayaks, bikes, katamaran and the pool. My kids enjoyed all of these things. The snorkeing was great although there was a tropical storm on the western side of the isthmus which caused high winds for our first day in Placencia and this resulted in murky water (we hardly noticed though).
We did find the Rum Pont Inn to be too far from town and other places to eat so that we needed to eat at the resort. We found the food to be good but found it to be very expensive. The meal plan here may have been a good idea for us, however, I would not have known this before hand. Also the cabannas at the Rum Point are very large, unlike duPlooys, and we could have gotten by with one cabanna for the family.
We did have a great time and these comments are provided for your information in advising future travelers. When we get our pictures back we will send you some via email or swing by Lyons sometime.
Thanks for all of the help,
Rick Farrand and Family
