Stewart Island/Ulva Island Tour
Make your way to Golden Bay for the short water taxi ride across Paterson Inlet. Ulva Island with 11 kilometres of coastline is a scenic gem of unsurpassed beauty, an open sanctuary and predator free. The walk is rich with mosses, ferns, liverworts, filmy ferns and native orchids. The ancient rimu tree is seen at all stages of growth, as well as Totara, kamahi, southern rata, and Miro abound among the uncurling fern fronds that carpet the forest floor. Ulva Island is a sanctuary to threatened wildlife and 30 saddleback were released in May 2000 with 16 delightful Stewart Island Robins released in October of the same year. The songs of bellbird and tui, their bursts of melody interspersed with kaka and the chattering native parakeet kakariki. This is indeed an island of sheer beauty and rich in spiritual and cultural heritage. |
